The Challenge
Following a recent storm, a homeowner in Omaha's Pepperwood neighborhood contacted American Arborist with concerns about a mature shade tree on their property.
The tree had suffered storm damage that left a large lead cracked and structurally compromised. In addition, several dead and decaying branches were present high in the canopy, limbs were beginning to crowd both the home and adjacent sidewalk, and excessive sucker growth had started to clutter the tree's structure.
The homeowner's primary concerns were safety, appearance, and preserving the long-term health of the tree.
Our Assessment
After evaluating the tree, our team determined that the tree could be preserved through strategic pruning and storm damage mitigation.
Key issues identified included:
A large cracked lead caused by storm damage
Deadwood and decaying branches in the upper canopy
Branches encroaching on the home
Limited sidewalk clearance
Excessive sucker growth throughout the canopy
Left unaddressed, these issues could increase the likelihood of future branch failure, property damage, and declining tree health.
The Solution
Our crew performed a comprehensive structural pruning designed to improve both safety and overall tree health.
Services performed included:
Removal of dead, broken, and hazardous branches
Removal of the storm-damaged cracked lead
Structural pruning to improve canopy form and branch architecture
Clearance pruning away from the home
Elevation pruning over the sidewalk
Removal of sucker growth up to approximately 20 feet throughout the canopy
Throughout the project, our goal was to reduce risk while maintaining the tree's natural appearance and long-term health.
The Results
The completed pruning significantly improved the safety, structure, and appearance of the tree.
The homeowner now has:
✔ Reduced risk of branch failure
✔ Improved clearance from the home and sidewalk
✔ A healthier canopy structure
✔ Better storm resilience moving forward
✔ A cleaner, more attractive landscape
By addressing the storm damage early, the homeowner was able to preserve a mature tree while reducing the likelihood of future issues.
Need Help After a Storm?
Storm damage isn't always obvious from the ground. Cracks, deadwood, and weakened branches can remain hidden in the canopy long after severe weather passes.
