Every autumn, Omaha transforms into a sea of gold, red, orange, and yellow. Then, almost overnight, those colorful leaves end up scattered across lawns, driveways, and gutters.
But why do trees lose their leaves in the first place? The answer is surprisingly clever.
Trees Are Preparing for Winter
Most trees in Nebraska are deciduous trees, meaning they lose their leaves every year. As temperatures cool and daylight hours shorten, trees begin preparing for winter dormancy. Dormancy is similar to hibernation. During this period, the tree conserves energy and slows many of its biological processes.
Leaves Require Energy
Leaves are incredible factories that produce food through photosynthesis. But they also require water and nutrients to maintain. During winter, water becomes harder for trees to access because the ground may freeze.
Rather than risk dehydration, deciduous trees shed their leaves and wait for spring.
Why Do Leaves Change Color First?
Throughout the growing season, chlorophyll gives leaves their green color. As trees prepare for winter, chlorophyll production slows and eventually stops. Once the green pigment fades, other colors become visible, including:
Yellow
Orange
Red
Purple
That's what creates Nebraska's beautiful fall colors.
Do Evergreens Lose Their Leaves?
Yes—but not all at once. Evergreens continuously replace older needles throughout the year. This allows them to remain green while still shedding foliage gradually.
When Should You Be Concerned?
Leaf drop in October and November is completely normal.
However, if you notice:
Leaf loss during summer
Large dead branches
Sparse canopies
Premature discoloration
your tree may be experiencing stress, disease, or insect issues.
Fall Is a Great Time for a Tree Inspection
As leaves fall, the structure of your tree becomes easier to evaluate.
This makes fall an ideal time to identify:
Deadwood
Structural issues
Storm damage
Potential hazards
